Twelve Ways to Warm Up the Winter Blues

Written by Dipali Desai

During the the winter-time or cooler seasons wherever you are around the world, the cycle is one of hibernation, withdrawing and stillness. In light of this natural seasonal rhythm, the body responds and consolidates the energy urging one to be introspective. In addition to all of this we can choose to support ourselves and warm up the winter blues so that it doesn't push us to an extreme point of depression or any other label for the winter energy.

Here are Twelve dazzling and easy suggestions to help you "spice" up the winter blues while honoring the hibernation process of the winter cycle.

One: Drink Nettle Tea to Perk You Up in New Ways
Drinking Nettle Tea is warming and helps you detoxify. Instead of drinking extra lattes, espressos or hot chocolates, reach for a warm Nettle Tea which helps the Kidneys cleanse and stay warm during the winter months. If you have a nice balance between what you desire and what is healthy for you, then you are supporting the body's natural process without taxing the body's systems.

Two: Work with and Use Flower Essences
Flower Essences are amazing support to the emotional and psychological levels, especially during low energy or emotion periods. The Flower Essences are vibrational holistic remedies. They work great in conjunction with traditional medicine or on their own. They are distilled in brandy or vinegar so inquire before purchasing. Try Perelandra's ETS Formula or their array of garden essences. Bach Rescue Remedy works wonders as does all their other individual essences.

Three: Use Essential Oils.
Oh it smells heavenly! Lavender, peppermint, cinnamon, orange, or any other ones which help invigorate and uplift your mood. Use them in a bath (be sure you know which oils are suitable for a bath or next to your skin), on a tissue next to your bed, in a room diffuser or in the car. If you are going to use candles with essential oils make sure its natural soy or beeswax candles which are much more natural and additives free.

Four: Move the Body and feel energized
Energy Work and Exercises gets the blood pumping and creates an internal ‘heat’ like wave that flow out into the entire body. Few minutes of jump rope or stretches even in bed gets the energy and blood pumping. Brush away any ‘blues’ or stuck energies off the physical, energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.

Five: Colorful Bursts.
Have warming colors surrounding you all through the winter: orange, yellow, red (easy on the dosage on this one we don't want you to get hyper active either), peach, coral, gold. Any color that adds pizzazz and warms you up helps shift your mood. Whether you choose to wear these colors or place them around your home such as candles, flowers, painting, blankets etc. You can tune in and ask yourself "what color would most resonate with me now?"

Six: Let there be Light.
Use a bulb that has natural Sunlight prism and place them in the areas of your home you most use. If the sun is out and weather is manageable, take a quick brisk walk and soak some sun rays as well as breathing in fresh oxygen.

Seven: Keep connected with whatever lifts you higher.
Choose to surround yourself with beauty, inspirational reading, uplifting television shows and people. Putting your attention into something that is inspirational or creative helps you to shift into a non-linear mode of being. It helps to direct the energy into form, color and harmony.

Eight: Get Support.
Having extra spiritual assistance is beneficial during a more low energy phase. If you have a mentor, spiritual teacher, network of support reach out to them when you are feeling low. If you have to schedule a session - do it. You are a worthwhile investment as much as getting a TV or paying the next bill. Sometimes we put ourselves to the edge before we reach out and it does not have to be that way.

Nine: Do things in Moderation.
Even though it’s tempting to go over your limit, offer yourself the gift of eating and drinking in moderation. You can eat yummie cookies and then balance that with healthy snacks such as salad or cucumber and dip. In this way, you are giving yourself permission to eat in a healthy way without denying the desire.

Ten: Treat Yourself.
As much as you give gifts to others, give yourself gifts when you can. Enjoy a nice therapeutic body treatment, reflexology, energy healing session, spiritual guidance session, relaxing bath or any type of spa treatment which would help uplift your mood.

Eleven: Relaxation and Quiet Time.
You can choose to create a therapeutic space for yourself. The hectic pace of day to day life on top of that the holiday stress can create major detours and strain your entire energy system and physical body. Make sure you 'schedule' time for yourself whether its 30 minutes or one hour. You can say no to a party and choose to meditate instead.

Twelve: Laughter is the Best Medicine
Watching funny movies or shows, putting cute funny picture up, a funny computer wallpaper, being around friends who uplift you, choosing to find the joy in everyday reality - are all ways of breaking up those winery blues. Laughter is contagious; better that than a cold or flu! Laughing also gets your circulation pumping and muscles working so there are wonderful side effects to engaging in such activity.

Note: As with anything, please use a healthy dose of common sense when applying any of the suggestions in this article. Extra research may also be beneficial.
