Frequently Asked Questions:

Jewelry:

What materials are used in the jewelry?

All of the metal in the jewelry is either sterling silver or fine silver unless otherwise stated. High quality gemstones and fresh water pearls are primarily used in the designs, as well as glass and crystal beads. Many of the handcrafted components are made by Nilam.

Gemstones and pearls are natural materials and there may be slight variations in color, size and shape. All of the stones are selected with quality in mind, however if any gemstones contain inclusions it is a part of their beauty and does not detract from it. Dyed gemstones are not commonly used in the designs, but you may see them on occasion. If any of the gemstones have been altered in some way such as dyed or heated to achieve a certain color, these treatments are permanent.

What does “oxidized” sterling silver mean?

Jewelry that is described as oxidized just means that the sterling silver was intentionally darkened to give it an antique look. The method used to achieve this finish on the silver is safe and non-toxic.

The best way to clean this type of jewelry is by using mild soap and warm water. Please note that the oxidation will be removed completely if cleaned with tarnish removing products such as sterling silver polishing cloths or chemical dips.

Reiki:

What is Reiki and how is it applied to the jewelry?

A simple way of explaining Reiki, is that it is non-physical universal energy which helps restore balance, harmony and wellness. Everything, including ourselves has energy in it even though it is not visible to the eyes. When working with the gemstones, beads and metal, Nilam clears the energy of the materials and infuses the jewelry with Reiki, adding a healing essence to the pieces. Essentially, the jewelry that is blessed with Reiki contributes to the overall well-being of the person wearing it.

Jewelry Repairs:

Do you offer repairs for jewelry?

Repairs are only available for jewelry that has been designed by Nilam. Some of the gemstones and components used in the jewelry are one of a kind and therefore it may not be possible to replace them with an exact duplicate. If this is the case, a similar design to the original can be made. Repair fees are determined once we know the extent of the repair.

Jewelry Care:

How should my jewelry be cared for?

Keep in mind that handmade jewelry is a bit more delicate and should be handled with a little more care. Although designed to last, proper care will ensure that you can enjoy your pieces for a long time. Store the jewelry in a way where it's not being crushed or tangled. Avoid sleeping in it or wearing it in water (salt, fresh, or chlorinated). Excessive heat, light and moisture can damage the metal and gemstones.

How do I clean my sterling silver and gemstone jewelry?

Humidity and chemicals can speed up the tarnishing process on sterling silver. To avoid spending a lot of time cleaning and removing tarnish from your silver jewelry, it's always best to store your pieces in a closed container or jewelry box. You can also buy non abrasive anti-tarnish strips to store with your pieces. If possible, minimize direct contact between the jewelry and any hair products, lotion or perfume that you use.

Using mild soap and warm water is a simple and easy way to clean your pieces. If you feel more comfortable using a jewelry cleaning solution, just make sure that it is safe for all types of gemstones. Many gemstones, especially soft stones such as pearls and turquoise are not safe in steam or ultrasonic cleaners.

If you have noticed that your sterling silver jewelry isn't as bright and is starting to show signs of tarnishing, it's easier to restore shine if you clean it right away. You can use a sterling silver polishing cloth and gently clean the silver, just be very careful that you don't use the cloth on the gemstones and pearls. You never want to use anything abrasive directly on gemstones/pearls such as polishing cloths or paste because it will scratch the surface of the stones.

If you feel unsure about how to clean your specific piece of jewelry, Nilam will be happy to answer any questions you have.
